Durante a sua vida Poe publicou três coleções de seus contos e uma novela. Uma coleção póstuma, editada por Rufus Wilmot Griswold, incorpora alguns manuscritos modificados, entretando Griswold não teve acesso a outras importantes correções e por isso sua edição está longe de ser definitiva.

As coleções abaixo estão em ordem cronológica:

  • Tales of the Folio Club -  (por volta de 1832-1836, não publicado como coleção. Os contos foram impressos separadamente.)

  • Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque  -  (1840, volume I e volume II — TGA )
  • Phantasy Pieces - (1842, segunda edição não publicada de Tales of G&A — TGAPP )

  • Tales by Edgar A. Poe -  (1845, TALES ) (re-editado com uma nova página-título em 1848, mas datado de 1849.)
  • J. Lorimer Graham copy of Tales - (Cópia pessoal de Poe de TALES, com numerosas e importantes correções e modificações, TALES-JLG )
